SS United States Sets Sail from Philadelphia: A Historic Departure

The SS United States, renowned as America’s flagship, has departed from Philadelphia, making its first move since 1996. Towed out of its berth, this historic vessel is now headed for Mobile, Alabama, where it will undergo preparations to become the World’s Largest Artificial Reef, set to be deployed off the coast of Destin-Fort Walton Beach.

The journey to Mobile will take approximately two weeks, aided by several support vessels. Upon arrival, the vessel will be prepped for its new role by removing hazardous materials such as nonmetallic parts and fuel, aimed at ensuring an environmentally responsible deployment.

Additionally, modifications will be made for the vessel to land upright underwater when deployed. This preparation period is expected to span about 12 months. Though the exact deployment site along the Gulf Coast has yet to be determined, it is projected to be approximately 20 nautical miles south of the Destin-Fort Walton Beach area.

As the World’s Largest Artificial Reef, the SS United States will provide a unique experience for divers from around the world, showcasing its distinctive design and features. More importantly, it will foster a thriving ecosystem, creating a habitat for numerous marine species.
