Norovirus Outbreak Affects Nearly 90 Passengers on Holland America Cruise Departing Florida

Nearly 90 individuals aboard the Holland America Line’s Eurodam, a cruise ship that set sail from Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale, have reported illnesses consistent with norovirus, as confirmed by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). The Eurodam, which embarked on a 10-day Caribbean cruise on February 19, has seen a total of 88 cases involving 79 passengers and nine crew members, which constitutes approximately 3% of those on board. Symptoms commonly include diarrhea and vomiting, with additional potential effects such as muscle aches, headaches, abdominal cramps, and fever.

In response to the outbreak, the crew has implemented enhanced sanitation measures and is isolating those who are unwell, adhering to CDC guidelines. Passengers have noted the crew’s extensive sanitation efforts, including sterilizing equipment during onboard activities.

The CDC highlights that norovirus infections affect around 19 million to 21 million people in the United States annually, making it the primary cause of gastrointestinal illness. In 2024 alone, 16 outbreaks were reported on cruise ships, with nine confirmed already in 2025, including incidents on other Holland America cruises, some of which also departed from Fort Lauderdale.

For preventive measures, the CDC advises cruise-goers to frequently wash their hands and stay hydrated to combat dehydration risks.
