Introducing Stena Line’s New Ferries: Connecta and Futura for the Belfast-Heysham Route

Swedish ferry company Stena Line has marked a significant milestone with the launch of its second methanol-ready NewMax hybrid ferry, the Stena Connecta, at China Merchants Jingling Shipyard. The ship is set to undergo interior outfitting before its anticipated delivery in early 2026.

The Stena Connecta is one of two new vessels designated for the Belfast-Heysham route across the Irish Sea, paired with its sister ship, Stena Futura, which is currently in outfitting and expected to begin service in autumn 2025. Both ferries are primarily intended for the transportation of freight and wheeled cargo.

These hybrid vessels are designed to operate on methanol and are equipped with technologies that allow for battery propulsion and the use of shore power when available. Additionally, Stena Connecta will feature rotor sails that harness wind energy to enhance fuel efficiency and reduce emissions.

Niclas Martensson, CEO of Stena Line, emphasized the importance of this launch, referring to it as a vital step in the company’s NewMax fleet investment program. He noted the increased demand for services on the Belfast to Heysham route and expressed confidence that the new capacity would be well-received.
