Tragedy at Sea: 32-Year-Old Filipino Crew Member Overboard from MSC Poesia Ship
The Uruguayan and Brazilian navies have launched a search and rescue operation following the disappearance of a 32-year-old Filipino crew member, Bueno Jeric, from the MSC Poesia ship, operated by MSC Cruises. The crew member was reported missing shortly after the vessel departed from Montevideo on February 21, 2025.
The absence was first noticed when he failed to report for duty, prompting a review of surveillance footage that allowed officers to determine when and where he went overboard. The MSC Poesia left Montevideo at 17:00 local time, heading for Camboriu, Brazil, with an expected arrival on February 23. Jeric was last seen on Deck 7, and his absence was confirmed when the ship was approximately 13 nautical miles from Brazilian waters.
Upon realizing the incident, the ship contacted the Uruguayan Navy, which initiated a response involving a patrol vessel and reconnaissance aircraft. A helicopter was also placed on standby, and navigational warnings were issued to nearby vessels.
By February 23, the Uruguayan Navy confirmed that the ship had pinpointed the moment the crew member went overboard. Surveillance footage showed him near the liferaft station on Deck 7, with additional footage capturing movement in the water.
As the search operation moved into Brazilian territorial waters, the Brazilian maritime authority took over while Uruguayan authorities were requested to continue their search within Argentina’s jurisdiction.
An investigation is currently ongoing to ascertain the circumstances of the incident, determining whether it was accidental or deliberate. All evidence, including footage and witness statements, has been secured onboard for examination by the relevant authorities.
