SS United States Makes Historic Arrival in Florida for Its Final Voyage

After departing from Philadelphia, the SS United States has recently arrived at the Florida coastline, marking its final voyage. Currently being towed to the port of Mobile, Alabama, this historic ocean liner is set to become the world’s largest artificial reef. A photo shared by Port Everglades captures the ship as it passed through Fort Lauderdale.

Those interested can monitor the SS United States’ journey via a live GPS tracking tool accessible here. The vessel left its dock at Pier 82 on February 19, 2025, after nearly three decades in Pennsylvania.

Acquired by Okaloosa County’s Tourist Development Department, the SS United States is being towed by the tugboat Vinik No. 6, with the journey expected to take about two weeks. Before it can be reefed, preparations will include the removal of hazardous materials and non-metal parts, ensuring the process is environmentally safe. This stage of preparation is anticipated to take around a year.

While the specific deployment location remains undetermined, it is projected to be about 20 nautical miles south of Destin-Fort Walton Beach. Modifications will ensure the ship rests upright on the ocean floor upon deployment.

In addition to the reefing project, plans are underway to collaborate with the SS United States Conservancy to establish a land-based museum in Destin-Fort Walton Beach. This museum will honor the ship’s legacy, featuring notable artifacts that will be taken from the vessel, including its funnels and radar mast.
