Asuka III Approaches Completion: Ems River Conveyance Set to Begin

The Asuka III, a 52,200-gross-ton cruise ship built by Meyer Werft for NYK Cruises, is approaching a significant milestone with its Ems River conveyance scheduled for March 2, 2025. This operation will transport the vessel from Papenburg, Germany, to Eemshaven, Netherlands. After reaching Eemshaven, Asuka III will undergo technical and nautical trials in the North Sea before continuing to Emden, Germany, for final outfitting. The ship is expected to be delivered to NYK Cruises in spring 2025.

This marks the first passenger ship completed in three decades under the Japanese flag, making Asuka III the largest cruise ship to hold this designation. The vessel is notable for its environmentally-friendly design, powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG), which significantly reduces harmful emissions, including particulate matter and various oxides.

Construction of the Asuka III began in September 2023, and it was floated out of the building dock in January 2025. The ship measures 230 meters (755 ft) in length and 29.8 meters (98 ft) in width, with the capacity to accommodate approximately 740 passengers. The upcoming conveyance along the Ems River is a crucial step towards the vessel’s completion and a remarkable achievement for both Meyer Werft and NYK Cruises.
