Thessaloniki Sets the Standard: Leading Mediterranean Ports in Embracing RightShip’s Emissions Portal

The Port of Thessaloniki, Greece, has distinguished itself as the first port in both the European Union and the Mediterranean to adopt RightShip’s Maritime Emissions Portal (MEP) as part of the METAVASEA project, led by HELMEPA and supported by the Lloyd’s Register Foundation.

This pilot program, which lasts one year, is set to establish a benchmark for sustainability in the region by delivering crucial data on Scope 3 emissions. This information will assist organizations in taking targeted, data-informed actions to mitigate their environmental impact.

The METAVASEA project places emphasis on a people-centric approach to maritime decarbonization in the Eastern Mediterranean. Coordinated by HELMEPA, the initiative collaborates with various organizations, including Lloyd’s Register and the World Maritime University, to explore the existing infrastructure for decarbonization efforts in Greece and Cyprus. It aims to develop flexible retraining tools for seafarers and port workers while also empowering maritime executives.

The MEP, crafted by RightShip, functions as a reliable tool for effectively monitoring and managing maritime emissions. ThPA S.A.’s integration of the MEP signifies its commitment to sustainability as an essential component of its operations. The port serves as a multi-gateway intermodal network and logistic hub for Southeast, Central, and Eastern Europe, aligning its operations with global decarbonization targets.

By adopting the MEP, ThPA S.A. will acquire vital data about the environmental impacts of incoming vessels, allowing it to implement initiatives that support greener practices in the maritime sector.

In addition to emissions monitoring, the METAVASEA project includes the upskilling of 1,500 employees in crucial areas such as new fuels, safety standards onboard, digital transitions, soft skills, and marine environmental awareness. The initiative seeks to engage shipping companies and port organizations in decarbonization efforts while also increasing awareness among students and the populace in the Eastern Mediterranean.
