Tragic Collision on China’s Yuanshui River: 11 Dead and 5 Missing After Ferry and Oil Spill Vessel Crash
On February 25, a tragic accident occurred on the Yuanshui River in Hunan province, China, when a small ferry collided with a larger oil spill recovery vessel. The incident resulted in the deaths of 11 people, while 5 others remain unaccounted for. A total of 19 individuals were reported to have been thrown overboard during the crash, with 3 being rescued on the same day.
The collision happened at approximately 10:00 a.m. local time near Qinglang Township in Yuanling County, as the ferry was struck from behind by the larger vessel. The Huanshui River in this area is known for its significant depth—averaging over 60 meters—and width, making rescue operations particularly challenging.
Rescue efforts faced obstacles due to the turbulent currents near the riverbed. Specialized teams equipped with sonar and diving gear are actively conducting underwater searches for the missing passengers. The Chinese Ministry of Emergency Management has also sent a team to investigate the cause of the accident to prevent similar incidents in the future.
The oil spill recovery vessel involved in the crash has been secured at the dock, and its 3 crew members, who were unharmed, are currently under police investigation.
