Residents Return to Santorini as Seismic Activity Persists and Cruise Ship Ban Remains in Effect

In recent weeks, Santorini Island has seen a notable decrease in seismic activity following an earthquake swarm that began in late January 2025. This reduction has allowed several thousand residents to return to their homes, with schools set to reopen on March 4th, now incorporating earthquake preparedness measures to ensure the safety of students.

Despite the normalization of life for residents, the Greek Maritime Ministry maintains a ban on cruise ship dockings at Santorini’s ports. This precaution, prompted by ongoing seismic concerns, is aimed at ensuring the safety of passengers and the integrity of the island’s infrastructure.

As a result of the restrictions, cruise lines are adapting their itineraries. Viking Cruises, for example, has adjusted two scheduled calls in March to alternative ports such as Kusadasi-Ephesus, Turkey and Nafplio, Peloponnese.

Authorities are closely monitoring the seismic situation to assess when it will be safe to lift the ban on maritime tourism.
