The SS United States: Historic Transatlantic Liner Set to Transform Into an Artificial Reef

The historic SS United States, once celebrated as the fastest ocean liner in the world, has embarked on a new chapter in its storied existence. Built in 1951 and moored for nearly three decades along Philadelphia’s Delaware River, the ship departed for Mobile, Alabama, on February 19, 2025, to prepare for its transformation into an artificial reef.

After a swift 1800-mile journey that concluded on March 3rd—two days earlier than scheduled—the vessel drew the attention of many as it navigated along the eastern seaboard, again showcasing its grandeur after 28 years of inactivity. Susan Gibbs, president of the SS United States Conservancy, remarked on the ship’s remarkable voyage, aligned with its legendary speed.

In Mobile, the ship will undergo a thorough remediation process, which includes the careful removal of various components such as bridge equipment, furnishings, and potential contaminants, including asbestos. This phase is expected to last until the end of the year.

Once remediation is complete, the SS United States will move to Okaloosa County, Florida, where it will be submerged to create the world’s largest artificial reef. Plans are also in progress for a museum and visitor center to enhance the site. Additionally, a documentary capturing the ship’s historical significance is in the works.
