Investigation Underway Following Fatal Overboard Incident Involving MSC Poesia Crew
A tragic incident recently occurred aboard the MSC Poesia, where a 32-year-old Filipino crew member named Jeric Bueno was confirmed dead five days after being reported missing. He had vanished during the ship’s journey from Montevideo, Uruguay, to Brazil.
The Philippine Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) announced on March 6 that surveillance footage showed Bueno falling overboard from Deck 7 near the liferaft assembly station after failing to report for his duty on February 22.
Search operations were promptly initiated by the Uruguayan Navy and later taken over by Brazilian authorities as the ship continued its voyage. Unfortunately, Bueno’s remains were recovered on February 27.
DMW Secretary Hans Cacdac stated that they are working with MSC and Bueno’s manning agency to provide financial assistance, psychological support, and logistics for repatriating his remains. In addition, evidence, including the CCTV footage, has been handed over to the proper authorities for investigation. As of now, foul play has not been ruled out.
This incident shines a light on ongoing concerns regarding maritime safety, especially for Filipino seafarers who represent a significant portion of the global cruise workforce. Advocacy groups are urging enhancements in safety protocols and oversight in the industry.
An official investigation is currently ongoing, with no disruptions reported in the operations of MSC Poesia.
