Klaipeda Port Launches €43.9M Construction of New Cruise Terminal

The Port of Klaipeda in Lithuania has begun the construction of a €43.9 million cruise terminal, contracted to UAB Tilsta. This ambitious three-year project entails the reconstruction of existing quays, the creation of new berthing infrastructure, and adjustments to basin depths at Winter Harbour to meet modern maritime requirements.

Algis Latakas, Director General of the Klaipeda State Seaport Authority, highlighted the terminal’s design, which merges functional port amenities with cultural and recreational spaces. The plans, finalized in late 2023, incorporate an open amphitheater facing the water, pedestrian and cycling pathways, event zones, and a marina that will address existing docking shortages. Additionally, an administrative building is included, featuring port management offices, a café, a conference room, and a rooftop observation deck.

Environmental impact assessments were completed in July 2023, and the building permits were secured by October 2023. Ongoing procurement is aimed at additional associated works.

This development is in line with evolving trends within the cruise industry. The 2024 season is set to begin earlier than usual, with Ambassador Cruise Line’s vessel, Ambience, already scheduled to arrive on February 24th. Latakas noted the surge in off-season maritime tourism, necessitating flexible infrastructure to accommodate the trend. Notably, in 2025, the ship carried 1,289 passengers, primarily from the UK, with about 40% of the scheduled vessels being over 290 meters in length.

This significant investment in the new terminal reflects Klaipeda’s strategic intention to enhance its competitiveness as a Baltic hub amid rising cruise traffic and year-round operational shifts in the cruise industry.
