Quantum OTS: Royal Caribbean’s Ship Successfully Conducts Four Medevac Operations Off New Caledonia
Royal Caribbean’s ship Quantum of the Seas experienced a rare series of medical emergencies, prompting four medical evacuations over just 24 hours off the coast of New Caledonia. This unusual incident occurred while the vessel was on a 7-night South Pacific voyage, navigating between Vanuatu and Brisbane, Australia.
On March 5th, the New Caledonia Operational Surveillance and Rescue Center (COSS-NC) initiated the first evacuation after a telemedical consultation indicated that a passenger required urgent hospitalization. The ship adjusted its course to Noumea, where two Australian nationals were successfully evacuated shortly after midnight.
As the Quantum of the Seas continued its journey, two separate medical emergencies arose on March 6th, requiring additional evacuations of two New Zealand nationals facilitated by local rescue teams. All affected passengers were stabilized aboard the ship before their transfer to medical facilities on land.
Notably, this string of incidents follows a similar event that occurred on February 18th, when three Australian passengers were also medically disembarked from the same ship. Despite these emergencies, Quantum of the Seas completed its itinerary as planned, returning to Brisbane on March 7th.
These evacuations highlight the challenges of addressing medical emergencies in remote maritime locales, reinforcing the importance of adhering to established safety protocols. Authorities in New Caledonia noted no alterations to the vessel’s schedule as a result of the incidents.
