Hapag-Lloyd Cruises Achieves Milestone with Antarctic Semi-Circumnavigation Completion
Hapag-Lloyd Cruises has successfully concluded a remarkable expedition featuring a semi-circumnavigation of Antarctica aboard the ship HANSEATIC inspiration. The voyage started on January 28th from Ushuaia, Argentina, and wrapped up in Christchurch, New Zealand, on March 2nd. This journey followed historic polar exploration routes, providing passengers opportunities to encounter Antarctica’s unique wildlife under favorable conditions.
A significant highlight was the smooth crossing of the Drake Passage, leading to visits to the South Shetland Islands and the Antarctic Peninsula. During the expedition, passengers also explored Peter I Island and the Ross Sea, where they witnessed emperor penguins in their natural habitat. Additional memorable experiences included a landing at Cape Bird, near Mount Erebus, and a visit to Ernest Shackleton’s historic expedition hut, which coincided with the explorer’s birthday.
Looking ahead, Hapag-Lloyd Cruises has announced its next Antarctic semi-circumnavigation set to take place from February 1st to March 5th, 2027. This upcoming journey will be conducted aboard HANSEATIC spirit, the sister ship to HANSEATIC inspiration, following the same Ushuaia-to-Christchurch route.
