Investigation Launched into Fatal Overboard Incident Involving MSC Poesia Crew
A tragic incident occurred aboard the MSC Poesia, involving a 32-year-old Filipino crew member named Jeric Bueno. He was reported missing during the ship’s journey from Montevideo, Uruguay, to Brazil on February 22. The Philippine Department of Migrant Workers confirmed his passing five days later.
Surveillance footage revealed that Bueno fell overboard from Deck 7 near the liferaft station after failing to show up for duty. Following the report, the Uruguayan Navy initiated search operations, which later transitioned to Brazilian authorities as the ship continued its route. Sadly, Bueno’s remains were recovered on February 27.
The Department of Migrant Workers is working with MSC Cruises and Bueno’s manning agency to provide support for the repatriation of his remains, alongside financial assistance and psychological aid for his family. Relevant evidence, including CCTV footage, has been handed over to authorities to investigate the circumstances surrounding his fall, and while no foul play has been determined yet, it remains a possibility.
This incident raises critical concerns regarding the safety of maritime occupations, especially for Filipino seafarers, who are a significant part of the global cruise workforce. Advocacy groups are calling for improved safety measures and greater oversight in the industry. An official investigation into the incident is ongoing, and MSC Poesia has not reported any further operational disruptions.
