Klaipeda Port in Lithuania Launches €43.9 Million Cruise Terminal Construction Project

The Port of Klaipeda in Lithuania has officially begun the construction of a new cruise ship terminal, with an investment of €43.9 million. The project, contracted to UAB Tilsta, is set to span three years and includes vital upgrades such as the reconstruction of existing quays, new berthing infrastructure, and enhanced basin depths at Winter Harbour to meet modern maritime needs.

Algis Latakas, the Director General of the Klaipeda State Seaport Authority, highlighted the project’s significance in blending operational capabilities with cultural and recreational offerings. The terminal’s design, completed in late 2023, features an open amphitheater overlooking the water, dedicated pathways for pedestrians and cyclists, event spaces, and a marina aimed at alleviating current docking shortages. Additionally, there will be an administrative building housing port management offices, a café, a conference room, and a rooftop observation deck.

Following environmental impact assessments that were completed in July 2023, building permits were granted by October 2023. The ongoing procurement for additional works indicates the project is moving forward steadily.

This development reflects changing trends within the cruise industry, as evidenced by the early start of the 2024 season on February 24th, featuring Ambassador Cruise Line’s vessel, Ambience. Latakas remarked on the increasing interest in off-season maritime tourism, which demands the creation of versatile infrastructure. In 2025, Ambience welcomed 1,289 visitors, primarily from the UK, with around 40% of the scheduled vessels being over 290 meters in length.

This investment showcases Klaipeda’s proactive approach to responding to the escalation of cruise traffic while adapting to the evolving needs of the industry year-round, ultimately establishing the port as a competitive hub in the Baltic region.
