Port Torshavn (Faroes) Unveils Plans for Dual-Purpose Terminal Development
The Port of Torshavn in the Faroe Islands is set to commence construction of a new passenger terminal valued at DKK 70 million (approximately EUR 9.4 million), with an expected completion date of June 2026. This dual-purpose terminal will cater to both cruise passengers and ferry traffic, moving away from prior constructions aimed at single-use operations.
Covering an area of 2000 m² as part of a larger 7000 m² facility, the passenger terminal will house office space for local ferry operator Smyril Line. An innovative aspect of the terminal is its application of ocean thermal energy conversion for heating, a system already in operation for another port-owned office building of similar size.
The terminal will facilitate ferry and cruise operations, with ferry passengers guided via gangways while cruise passengers will be shuttled to the dockside. Although the Faroe Islands are a Schengen member, the new terminal will include specialized immigration and customs facilities to improve service and processing for non-EU travelers navigating through Denmark’s Faroes archipelago.
With these enhancements, the Torshavn Port aims to provide a more efficient transit experience for all visitors.
