Alaska Senator Proposes Lifting U.S. Cruise Ship Docking Requirement in B.C.: “Two Can Play This Game

With the ongoing trade tensions between Canada and the U.S., Alaska Senator Dan Sullivan has suggested he might advocate for lifting the law requiring American cruise ships to dock in British Columbia. This statement follows B.C. Premier David Eby’s announcement regarding potential tolls for U.S. trucks traversing the province, which is seen as a measure in response to President Trump’s significant 25% tariff on Canadian goods.

Speaking on an Alaskan radio show, Sullivan indicated that should British Columbia implement these charges, he would seek to amend the Passenger Vessel Services Act. This legislation mandates that U.S. cruise ships heading to Alaska must make a stop in British Columbia. Sullivan argued that such a legislative change could threaten billions in tourism revenue for Canadian provinces.

The B.C. Ministry of Transportation clarified that while new legislation does not currently include fees for Alaska-bound trucks, it provides the province with the authority to impose such charges in the future, contingent upon the developments of trade negotiations. The ministry emphasized that their intention is to avoid implementing fees, hoping for a resolution to the tariff issues instead.

In response, the Greater Victoria Harbour Authority acknowledged the complexities surrounding Alaska’s role in local cruise tourism but remains optimistic about Victoria’s appeal as a cruise destination, regardless of legislative changes. Similarly, the Port of Vancouver maintained confidence in its long-standing position as a premier homeport for Alaskan cruises, reinforcing its attractiveness to travelers.

Sullivan’s remarks highlighted the contentious nature of U.S.-Canada relations, particularly recalling the pandemic when international cruise ships were barred from docking in Canada. He warned that if trade tensions escalate further, Alaska’s response might severely impact Canadian tourism.
