Malta Unveils Historic Shore Power Agreement with Carnival Corporation

The Maltese government and Carnival Corporation have entered into a groundbreaking Shore Power Purchase Agreement, marking the Mediterranean’s first such initiative. This agreement reflects Malta’s dedication to sustainable economic practices and was signed by Carnival UK and P&O Cruises on behalf of all Carnival brands.

During the announcement, Malta’s Prime Minister, Robert Abela, emphasized the importance of prioritizing sustainability, innovation, and efficiency. The agreement aims to introduce fully electrified cruise berths as part of the shore-to-ship initiative, significantly enhancing Malta’s maritime infrastructure. This development will allow cruise ships to reduce their carbon footprints by utilizing power from the local grid while docked.

Additionally, the local government stated that all Carnival Corporation vessels would have the capability to connect to the new shore power grid, a move applauded by Carnival UK & P&O Cruises President, Paul Ludlow. He highlighted the rich history of P&O Cruises in Malta and reiterated their commitment to sustainable practices while fostering positive relationships with local communities.

Prime Minister Abela pointed out that cruise liners contribute approximately €88 million to Malta’s economy annually, with around €40 million generated directly from passenger spending. He asserted that this initiative places Malta at the forefront of sustainable maritime practices, exceeding existing European Union regulations.

The strategic direction promised by the agreement integrates renewable energy sources, including solar and wind power. Abela proclaimed that Malta’s commitment to harnessing natural resources would not only lend to reduced emissions but also position the island as a leader in green advancement within the Mediterranean region.

Chris Bonett, Malta’s Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Public Works, noted that this agreement redefines industry standards and alleviates pollution burdens on local communities. He highlighted Malta’s proactive stance, being five years ahead of the EU’s 2030 deadlines for such initiatives.

Stephen Xuereb, the COO of Global Ports Holding and CEO of Valletta Cruise Port, stated that this agreement heralds a new era for Malta’s maritime industry. As the first Mediterranean port to offer shore power supply, Malta aims to balance sustainable growth with economic benefits for the local community and the cruise industry at large.

This agreement is seen as a significant milestone in advancing Malta’s commitment to environmental sustainability within the maritime sector.
