Carnival Corporation Boosts Renewable Energy Initiatives with New Solar Parks in Roatan and Cozumel
Carnival Corporation has made significant strides in its renewable energy efforts by launching solar parks at Mahogany Bay Cruise Center in Roatan, Honduras, and Puerta Maya in Cozumel, Mexico. These initiatives are a part of the company’s strategy to integrate sustainable energy solutions into its global port operations, aiming to minimize environmental impact while promoting the long-term sustainability of these destinations.
At Mahogany Bay, the solar array consists of over 400 high-efficiency panels, which are expected to meet 60-70% of the port’s total energy demands. Similarly, the solar installation at Puerta Maya will provide renewable energy for terminal facilities, reducing reliance on conventional electricity sources and supporting Cozumel’s sustainability goals.
These installations build on previous solar projects introduced in 2023, including those at Amber Cove Cruise Center in the Dominican Republic and Carnival’s terminals in Barcelona. Such efforts align with the company’s broader mission to reduce greenhouse gas emissions across its operations.
Mahogany Bay Cruise Center, which opened in 2009, is a vital conduit for Roatan’s tourism sector, aiding local employment, business partnerships, and economic growth. It received the Blue Flag 5-Star certification in March 2024, the only beach in Honduras to receive this prestigious acknowledgment for environmental efforts.
Established in 1997, Puerta Maya plays a crucial role in Cozumel’s tourism economy. It features three berths and is projected to host over 1.8 million guests in 2025 from Carnival’s cruise lines, making up approximately 43% of total cruise visitors to the island. The port supports around 100 direct jobs and positively impacts about 1,200 indirect jobs in sectors such as tour operations, retail, and transportation.
Carnival Corporation continues to prioritize environmental stewardship at its key port destinations through various initiatives, including waste reduction programs, energy efficiency upgrades, and community-backed conservation efforts. These activities encompass coastal cleanups, reforestation, and coral reef preservation projects aimed at maintaining the ecological integrity of the regions served. The company also focuses on minimizing waste through composting, recycling, and water conservation efforts.
By expanding its renewable energy projects, Carnival Corporation underscores its commitment to sustainable port management while contributing to the economic and environmental health of its destinations. The company publishes annual reports detailing its greenhouse gas emissions reductions and sustainability efforts.
