Cunard’s Queen Anne Implements Enhanced Security Measures in Piracy-Prone Waters
During its inaugural world voyage, Cunard’s Queen Anne implemented enhanced security protocols while navigating the Sulu and Celebes seas, areas known for their history of piracy. This decision was communicated to passengers by Captain Inger Klein Thorhauge, who advised them to minimize visibility by turning off unnecessary stateroom lights, closing curtains, and avoiding open deck areas at night.
From March 14th to 15th, the external promenade deck was closed between the hours of 9:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m., with lighting reduced to discourage potential threats. Although no specific piracy threats were reported during the voyage, these precautions aimed to safeguard passengers and the crew.
The Sulu and Celebes seas, which lie between Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines, have experienced piracy in the past, although reported incidents have diminished significantly, with the last known kidnapping occurring in 2020.
The MS Queen Anne set sail from Southampton on January 10, and it successfully docked in Manila, Philippines, on March 16, continuing its itinerary without any incidents. Cunard emphasized that the safety and security of its guests and crew are its foremost priorities, noting that the likelihood of piracy against larger vessels like the Queen Anne is low.
