Viking Expands Seine River Fleet with the Launch of the Viking Nerthus Ship
Viking has officially added a new ship, the Viking Nerthus, to its fleet, taking delivery on March 18, 2025, at Meyer’s Neptun Werft shipyard in Rostock-Warnemunde, Germany. This longship is designed to carry 168 guests across 84 staterooms and will enhance Viking’s offerings on the Seine River.
The Viking Nerthus is set to operate two main itineraries: the 8-day Paris & the Heart of Normandy and the NEW 8-day Christmastime in Paris & Normandy voyage. These journeys will include stops at scenic and historical sites such as Giverny, Rouen, and the Normandy beaches, with roundtrip sailing from Paris. The ship’s unique design features Scandinavian elements, a square bow, an Aquavit Terrace, and a range of stateroom options similar to its sister ships, including Viking Kari, Viking Radgrid, Viking Skaga, and Viking Fjorgyn.
In terms of sustainability, the Viking Nerthus has a hybrid propulsion system that includes batteries and exhaust gas after-treatment, as well as shore power connectivity, helping to reduce fuel consumption at port. Solar panels onboard further support its energy efficiency.
Viking’s commitment to expansion is evident, with plans for 25 more river ships by 2028 and 9 ocean ships by 2030, aiming to operate a total of 109 river vessels and 21 ocean and expedition ships by the decade’s end.
