Over 200 Cruise Ship Passengers Struck Down by Norovirus During Month-Long Voyage
More than 200 passengers on the Cunard cruise ship Queen Mary 2 have reported illness related to norovirus during a transatlantic cruise. The ship, which departed from Southampton, U.K. on March 8, was conducting a month-long voyage that included stops in New York and Eastern Caribbean islands.
Out of the total 2,538 passengers, 224 individuals became ill, alongside 17 crew members, as confirmed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The primary symptoms exhibited were diarrhea and vomiting, leading to the isolation of those infected.
The Queen Mary 2 is scheduled to return to Southampton on April 6. In response to the outbreak, Cunard has increased its sanitation measures. The cruise line has also begun collecting stool samples from sick passengers for further testing.
Norovirus is highly contagious and can lead to gastroenteritis, causing inflammation in the stomach and intestines. It spreads through contaminated food, surfaces, or direct person-to-person contact. Symptoms often include a combination of fever, chills, vomiting, and abdominal cramps, with recovery typically occurring within one to three days.
There is no specific medication to cure norovirus; treatment generally focuses on staying hydrated. The CDC recommends frequent handwashing and thorough cleaning of potentially contaminated surfaces as effective prevention strategies.
