Windstar Cruises Unveils Second Solar Eclipse-Themed Cruise for August 2026
Windstar Cruises has officially revealed plans for a second solar eclipse-themed voyage scheduled for August 2026. This unique sailing experience offers guests the chance to witness a total solar eclipse from the deck of the 148-guest sailing yacht, Wind Spirit, while navigating the tranquil waters of the Western Mediterranean.
The "Mediterranean Sunset Eclipse Cruise" will embark from Rome (Civitavecchia, Italy) on August 6, 2026, and spans seven nights. The itinerary includes stops in picturesque ports such as Bastia and Calvi in Corsica, Alghero in Sardinia, and Mahon in Menorca. Notably, the cruise allows for two full days at sea, creating an immersive maritime adventure.
On August 12, Wind Spirit will position itself strategically north of Mallorca, Spain, to ensure unobstructed views of the solar eclipse, set to occur at 8:30 p.m. With protective eyewear provided for all passengers, the ship will host an eclipse watch party on deck, promising a remarkable perspective of this celestial showcase.
The 2026 solar eclipse will carve its path of totality across Spain and Portugal, with maximum totality lasting roughly 2 minutes and 18 seconds. Viewing the eclipse from the open sea presents a distinct advantage, as guests can admire the horizon without any terrestrial obstructions.
In addition to the eclipse viewing, the itinerary includes visits to charming Mediterranean destinations:
- Bastia, Corsica: A lively port town boasting a rich history, 18th-century architecture, and the inviting Jardin Romieu gardens.
- Calvi, Corsica: Known for its historic citadel and scenic bay, visitors can enjoy sunlit beaches, vineyards, and explore local historical sites.
- Alghero, Sardinia: Nicknamed "Little Barcelona," Alghero features ancient fortifications, vibrant markets, and stunning coastal landscapes.
- Mahon, Menorca: Famous for its expansive natural harbor, Mahon offers beautiful beaches, historic churches, and archaeological sites dating back to the Talayotic era.
This exceptional cruise itinerary promises not only a front-row seat to a rare astronomical event but also an exploration of some of the most captivating ports in the Mediterranean.
