Zelim Tests AI-Powered MOB Detection System on the Ambassador Ambition Cruise Ship

Zelim, a firm from Scotland focused on maritime safety technology, has successfully launched an AI-based man overboard (MOB) detection system aboard the cruise ship Ambition, managed by Ambassador Cruise Lines. The new system, named ZOE, utilizes a mix of infrared and optical cameras, sensors, and sophisticated software to provide continuous 360-degree surveillance for bridge officers.

Unlike traditional MOB systems that primarily detect falls, ZOE uses AI-driven models to identify and track individuals who have fallen overboard. Nick Hughes, COO of Ambassador Cruise Lines, emphasized that passenger and crew safety is the company’s highest priority. With ZOE in place, the Navigation Bridge receives immediate alerts in the event of an overboard incident, and the system continues to track the individual until they are rescued.

Doug Lothian, Chief Technology Officer at Zelim, noted that real-time tracking is a key advantage of ZOE. Traditional systems often lose sight of a person drifting away from the ship, complicating rescue efforts. In contrast, ZOE employs precise geo-location data to allow bridge teams to quickly and accurately coordinate recovery operations.

Currently undergoing trials on the Ambition, ZOE aims to meet ISO 21195 safety standards for MOB detection. During certification tests conducted by Lloyd’s Register, ZOE achieved an impressive detection accuracy rate of 96.8% from distances of up to 337 meters.

Stewart Gregory, COO of Zelim, praised Ambassador Cruise Lines for adopting the AI-driven MOB detection system, stating that its implementation on the Ambition marks a significant step for the cruise industry. This innovative technology enables cruise companies to effectively reduce the risks associated with losing passengers or crew members at sea, particularly in challenging weather or nighttime conditions.

The ZOE system will be showcased at Seatrade Global Cruise in Miami, Florida, on April 7–10, 2025, which is expected to attract substantial interest from cruise operators looking to enhance their safety measures with AI technology.

With its high accuracy rate and real-time tracking capabilities, ZOE sets a new standard in maritime safety, paving the way for advancements in passenger protection across cruise lines globally.
