Major Drydock Refurbishment of the MS The World at Navantia, Cadiz: A Deep Dive into the Transformation

MS The World, the largest privately-owned residential vessel in operation, has entered a scheduled drydock at Navantia Shipyard in Cadiz, Spain, for a six-week maintenance and upgrade period. This refit, part of a standard triennial drydock cycle, aims to ensure the vessel’s operational integrity while enhancing systems and introducing sustainability measures.

The extensive drydocking includes various upgrades. Notably, a High Voltage Shore Connection (HVSC) system will be installed, allowing the ship to utilize shore power while at port, reducing fuel consumption and emissions during dock time. This effort is consistent with environmental regulations in areas like California and parts of Europe.

Improvements to hull efficiency are also slated, such as replacing the bulbous bow with a new design optimized for lower operating speeds, which is expected to decrease hull resistance by approximately 10% and lead to reduced greenhouse gas emissions. Additionally, the application of a silicone-based antifouling coating will enhance fuel efficiency by reducing hydrodynamic drag and biofouling.

Other significant upgrades will include the replacement of chillers and fan coil units (FCUs) to enhance the HVAC system’s efficiency, as well as renovations to hospitality spaces. The Pool Bar & Grill on Deck 11 will be redesigned for improved food service and greater guest capacity, featuring an expanded bar, pantry, and new kitchen equipment.

On Deck 12, the putting green will be resurfaced to more closely mimic land-based lawns, and a new golf simulator will be introduced in The World Golf Club, allowing residents to engage in virtual golfing experiences with ball-tracking capabilities. This area will also accommodate other sports activities.

Wellness facilities will see the addition of a cold plunge pool within the Aqua Spa, upgraded treatment rooms with heated flooring, and modernized salon equipment. Marine operations will be enhanced by a custom-configured 10-seat Zodiac Pro 850, designed for stability and maneuverability in near-shore and expeditionary excursions.

Elevator systems will also receive an overhaul, improving safety and ride quality, while roughly 50 private residences aboard The World will experience varying degrees of refurbishment, including new flooring, cabinetry, and updated bathrooms.

Det Norske Veritas (DNV) will provide a Statement of Extended Life following the refit, affirming the vessel’s condition is comparable to a much younger ship. Once the drydock period concludes, The World will re-enter service with improved environmental compliance, operational efficiency, and enhanced amenities, continuing its legacy as the only 100% residential mega yacht in operation with a global itinerary.
