Explora Journeys Celebrates the Launch of EXPLORA IV at Palermo Shipyard

Explora Journeys has announced the successful launch of the troncone, or forward lower section, of the EXPLORA IV, the fourth ship in its planned fleet of six luxury cruise vessels, set for delivery by 2028. The launch ceremony occurred at Fincantieri’s shipyard in Palermo, Sicily, marking a significant milestone as it is the first major section of the ship to be transferred from land to water. Over 350 guests including shipyard staff, stakeholders, and representatives from Explora Journeys attended the event.

The EXPLORA IV is expected to be delivered in 2027. After completing the outfitting of the bow section, it will be moved for final assembly at Fincantieri’s Sestri Ponente facility near Genoa. This significant step highlights the ongoing development of the Explora Journeys fleet and the productive partnership with Fincantieri, known for constructing technically sophisticated and high-specification passenger vessels.

The vessel is being built to strict standards emphasizing performance, energy efficiency, and onboard comfort. All ships in the Explora Journeys fleet will feature contemporary maritime technology and reflect Italian shipbuilding excellence. The investment includes a focus on sustainable practices, with the EXPLORA III through EXPLORA VI powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG).

The MSC Group’s Cruise Division is heavily investing, contributing over EUR 3.5 billion towards these six ships. This initiative is projected to generate an economic impact exceeding EUR 15 billion in Italy, creating significant industrial activity and job opportunities within the shipbuilding sector. Each ship entails approximately 7 million hours of labor and employs around 2,500 workers during a 2- to 3-year construction period.

The inaugural ship, EXPLORA I, began operations on August 1, 2023, followed by EXPLORA II, which was delivered on September 12, 2024. EXPLORA III and EXPLORA IV are slated to enter service in 2026 and 2027, respectively, with EXPLORA V and EXPLORA VI planned for 2027 and 2028.
