MS The World Completes Major Dry Dock Refurbishment at Navantia in Cadiz

MS The World, the largest privately-owned residential vessel in operation, is set to undergo a significant drydock refurbishment at the Navantia Shipyard in Cadiz, Spain. The maintenance and upgrade period will last approximately six weeks and is part of the vessel’s standard triennial drydock cycle aimed at maintaining operational integrity and enhancing onboard systems.

This refurbishment plan includes a variety of structural, mechanical, and aesthetic upgrades. A major upgrade will be the installation of a High Voltage Shore Connection (HVSC) system, allowing the vessel to use shore power while docked. This is expected to reduce fuel consumption and emissions significantly, aligning the ship with shore power requirements in eco-sensitive areas like California and parts of Europe.

In addition to improving efficiency, modifications to the hull are planned, including the replacement of the bulbous bow with a new design intended to lower operating speeds and decrease hull resistance by roughly 10%. This change is anticipated to reduce greenhouse gas emissions accordingly. Furthermore, applying a silicone-based antifouling coating will minimize hydrodynamic drag and the growth of marine biofouling.

Other enhancements include the upgrade of chillers and fan coil units (FCUs) to better the HVAC system’s efficiency, alongside refurbishments of hospitality spaces. The Pool Bar & Grill on Deck 11 will be reconfigured to improve service operations and guest capacity, showcasing a larger bar, an expanded pantry, and upgraded galley equipment. A new watertight canopy and modern furnishings will provide functional updates.

Deck 12 will see the putting green resurfaced to more closely resemble land-based greens, alongside the installation of a golf simulator within The World Golf Club, offering residents a virtual golfing experience with over 100 worldwide courses. The simulator will also include features for various other sports activities.

The Aqua Spa will welcome a new cold plunge pool for thermal therapy, while treatment rooms will receive heated flooring. The onboard salon will also see cosmetic and equipment updates to enhance service quality.

Marine operations are set to improve with the addition of a custom 10-seat Zodiac Pro 850, designed for near-shore excursions and wildlife observation in remote areas unreachable by the main vessel.

Elevators on the ship will undergo a system upgrade in collaboration with KONE to improve safety and ride quality. These adjustments are critical for maintaining operational efficiency and ensuring passenger mobility across the vessel’s decks.

As part of the extensive refurbishment, around 50 private residences on The World will also receive upgrades. These will include new flooring, cabinetry, soft furnishings, and modern appliances, as well as updated bathrooms featuring new sanitary ware and walk-in showers. These enhancements will ensure the residences meet contemporary living standards.

After the refurbishment, The World will continue its operations with improved environmental compliance, increased operational efficiency, and upgraded amenities for its residents. The ship maintains its status as the only fully residential mega yacht regularly available for its private community, with a global itinerary and long-range capabilities.
