Celestyal Discovery Takes a Greener Voyage with Biofuel Blend to Reduce CO₂ Emissions
Eastern Mediterranean fuel supplier Coral Marine has made a significant step in reducing carbon emissions by successfully delivering the first marine fuel blend that incorporates biofuels in Greece. This milestone was achieved on April 8, with the cruise vessel Celestyal Discovery becoming the first ship in Greek waters to utilize this innovative blend of conventional marine fuel and biofuel.
The new fuel blend is reported to reduce CO₂ emissions by approximately 21%. This initiative was done in collaboration with the Greek multinational energy group Motor Oil. The biofuel, created from recycled cooking oils by Verd—a subsidiary of Motor Oil—is classified as a second-generation fuel. This means it does not compete with agricultural production for resources and aligns with the latest ISO 8217:2024 standards, ensuring it maintains high performance and operational safety.
Coral Marine emphasizes that this move is not only beneficial for the company but also supports the International Maritime Organization’s goals for reducing CO₂ emissions across the maritime sector.
