Viking and Fincantieri Unveil Ambitious Plans for Hydrogen-Powered Cruise Ship
Viking, in collaboration with Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri, has unveiled plans for Viking Libra, the world’s first hydrogen-powered cruise ship. Currently under construction at Fincantieri’s Ancona yard, Viking Libra is expected to be delivered in the fourth quarter of 2026.
This innovative project marks a significant step towards cleaner propulsion technologies and zero-emission maritime operations. Equipped with a hybrid propulsion system utilizing liquefied hydrogen and fuel cells—developed in partnership with Isotta Fraschini Motori—Viking Libra aims to generate up to 6 MW of power, operating without emissions. This design enables access to environmentally sensitive areas that are typically unreachable for conventional cruise ships due to emissions restrictions.
Torstein Hagen, Chairman and CEO of Viking Group, emphasized that the company’s commitment to fuel-efficient designs has been a consistent priority across its fleets. He noted that the Viking Libra, along with its sister ship Viking Astrea, will further solidify the company’s environmental efforts, as their investment in hydrogen technology aims to achieve true zero-emission operation.
Fincantieri’s CEO, Pierroberto Folgiero, highlighted that Viking Libra represents a landmark achievement in maritime sustainability, being the first cruise ship to utilize onboard-stored hydrogen for power.
Viking is also concurrently constructing Viking Astrea, which is set to be delivered in 2027 and will incorporate similar hydrogen propulsion systems. Additionally, contracts for two more ocean vessels have been signed, with anticipated deliveries in 2031 and options for two further ships in 2033.
These initiatives are part of Viking’s expansive fleet growth and sustainability strategy, targeting a total of 110 river vessels by 2028 and a fleet of 23 ocean and expedition ships by 2031. The company plans to introduce 26 new river vessels by 2028 and 11 ocean ships by 2031, reinforcing its leadership in sustainable cruising experiences.
