Japan’s Largest Cruise Ship, Asuka III, Successfully Delivered to NYK Cruises

On April 10, 2025, NYK Cruises officially took delivery of Japan’s largest cruise ship, Asuka III, from Meyer Werft during a ceremony in Emden, Germany. This event saw the attendance of key figures, including NYK Cruises President Hiroyuki Endo and Meyer Group CEO Bernd Eikens, marking the ship’s official entry into the fleet.

Asuka III boasts a gross tonnage of 51,950 and can accommodate 740 passengers. Notably, it is powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG), which highlights its energy-efficient design and construction by Meyer Werft. The ship’s interior reflects Japanese aesthetics and will feature art from notable Japanese artists, including a fresco by Hiroshi Senju and paintings by Reiji Hiramatsu.

After delivery, Asuka III will head to its home port in Yokohama, Japan, for final outfitting. Its inaugural season will feature over 30 destinations across Japan, including Hakodate, Otaru, Takamatsu, Shingu, Muroran, and Moji. A standout event of its inaugural season is the 12-night "Japan Circumnavigation Cruise," which departs from Yokohama in early August and includes stops at Hakodate, Otaru, Kanazawa, Maizuru, Moji, and Beppu.

The addition of Asuka III to the NYK Cruises fleet signifies a focus on sustainability and a design tailored for the Japanese market. The ship’s construction represents a milestone in cruise shipbuilding, especially since it was the first order placed with Meyer Werft during the pandemic.
