Viking and Fincantieri Unveil Ambitious Plans for a Hydrogen-Powered Cruise Ship

Viking, in collaboration with Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri, has unveiled plans for the Viking Libra, the world’s first hydrogen-powered cruise ship. Currently being constructed at Fincantieri’s Ancona yard, the vessel is scheduled for delivery in the fourth quarter of 2026.

This ambitious project aims to propel the cruise industry towards cleaner propulsion technologies and zero-emission maritime operations. Equipped with a hybrid propulsion system utilizing liquefied hydrogen and fuel cells, developed alongside Isotta Fraschini Motori, the Viking Libra’s system is expected to generate up to 6 MW of power, facilitating emission-free operations. This innovative design will allow access to environmentally protected regions typically restricted due to emissions standards.

Torstein Hagen, Chairman and CEO of Viking Group, emphasized that Viking has always prioritized fuel-efficient design across its river and ocean fleets. He believes that the introduction of the Viking Libra, alongside its sister ship Viking Astrea, will further enhance the company’s environmental initiatives and commitment to achieving genuine zero-emission performance.

Fincantieri’s CEO, Pierroberto Folgiero, stated that the Viking Libra stands as a significant milestone not only as the first cruise ship powered by stored hydrogen but also as a reflection of the company’s efforts to lead the maritime industry toward sustainability.

In addition to Viking Libra, construction is also underway for Viking Astrea, which will feature similar hydrogen propulsion systems and is slated for delivery in 2027. Viking Group and Fincantieri have also completed contracts for two more ocean vessels, anticipated for delivery in 2031, with options for two additional ships in 2033.

These developments are part of Viking’s broader strategy aimed at expanding its fleet while committing to sustainability. By 2028, the company plans to operate 110 river vessels and by 2031 expects to have a fleet of 23 ocean and expedition ships, reinforcing its leadership position in sustainable and experience-oriented cruising.
