Technical Glitch Leads to Cruise Ship Sailing Cancellation: What You Need to Know
The excitement of passengers preparing for a Mediterranean cruise aboard the MSC Sinfonia turned to dismay when they received alarming news the night before their sailing. Set to depart from Bari, Italy, on April 12, 2025, the vessel was scheduled for a 7-night journey to locations including Athens and Istanbul. However, a technical issue prompted MSC Cruises to cancel the voyage.
Passengers discovered the cancellation via a text message sent just before 7 p.m. on April 11, stating, "IMPORTANT: MSC Sinfonia’s cruise from Bari tomorrow has been cancelled due to technical issues.” The message included an assurance that assistance with accommodations would be forthcoming, followed by an apology for the inconvenience caused.
Onboard, guests who were mid-voyage during a roundtrip from Istanbul faced an abrupt change, unaware of the issues affecting their upcoming leg. Reports indicated that MSC Sinfonia faced a speed-reducing malfunction, requiring a Coast Guard escort to Bari, where it remains docked.
The vessel’s technical troubles not only disrupted the planned itinerary but also stranded additional passengers waiting to board in Athens and Turkey. To compensate affected travelers, MSC Cruises offered a full refund along with a future cruise credit equivalent to the fare paid for the canceled sailing.
As this situation unfolded, it coincided with MSC’s celebration of its latest ship, the MSC World America, which was having its christening event in Miami. Unfortunately, this is not the first instance of technical difficulties for MSC, as seen recently with the MSC Bellissima, which faced engine failure in December 2024.
The underlying issue affecting MSC Sinfonia is tied to its propulsion system, which can involve myriad mechanical failures that complicate efforts to restore normal function. As of now, MSC has indicated that updates regarding the ship’s operational status would not be available until April 15, after which the Sinfonia is expected to resume its planned itineraries.
