China Launches Operations at the World’s Largest Cruise Terminal in Xiamen

Following the recent opening of a new facility by MSC Cruises at PortMiami, which was previously considered the world’s largest cruise terminal, China has now taken the lead with the inauguration of Terminal 2 at Xiamen International Cruise Terminal. The terminal welcomed its first departure with the Adora Mediterranea (formerly known as Costa Mediterranea) from Port Xiamen in Fujian Province.

This new terminal spans an impressive 68,000 square meters, surpassing MSC’s Terminal AA in Miami, which covers 45,787 square meters. The facility is part of the Xiamen International Cruise Ship Center and aims to enhance China’s presence in the global cruise market, according to China National Radio.

Designed to accommodate several large vessels simultaneously—each capable of holding up to 140,000 gross tons—the terminal features three berths and cutting-edge passenger processing technologies, including biometric facial recognition and dual-screen security checkpoints, to streamline boarding times to under ten minutes per passenger.

Beyond its operational functions, Terminal 2 integrates cultural and tourism infrastructure. A notable attraction, titled "Time Meets Island," offers visitors cultural experiences connected to Minnan heritage, featuring live performances, exhibitions, and a vibrant night market.

The launch of this terminal signifies a pivotal step in revitalizing China’s cruise industry, which was significantly impacted during the COVID crisis. The deployment of the Adora Mediterranea as China’s first large cruise vessel under domestic management highlights the country’s capacity for managing cruise operations and its commitment to boosting international cruise tourism.
