Hurtigruten’s Ship Otto Sverdrup to Revert Back to Its Original Name: MS Finnmarken
In May 2025, Hurtigruten will revert the name of its vessel, currently known as MS Otto Sverdrup, back to its original name, MS Finnmarken. This ship, which was first launched in 2002, was renamed in 2021 when it was transferred to Hurtigruten’s expedition division, HX. After rejoining the main fleet in 2024, the ship will take on its former name, which reflects the company’s tradition of naming vessels after significant Norwegian coastal areas, natural wonders, and historical figures.
Hurtigruten’s CEO, Hedda Felin, highlighted that the name Finnmarken carries deep-rooted significance for its guests and staff, as well as for the Norwegian coastline, and expressed the company’s eagerness to welcome passengers aboard a ship that honors this legacy.
The upcoming MS Finnmarken will be the third vessel to bear this iconic name. The original, DS Finnmarken, launched in 1912, served for 44 years, while the second iteration, MS Finnmarken, debuted in 1956 and was in operation until 1993. Both historical ships are on display at the Hurtigruten Museum in Stokmarknes.
The current MS Finnmarken is set to operate the North Cape Line, facilitating voyages between Hamburg and Honningsvag. This particular route holds importance for Hurtigruten, especially in attracting the German market. Marius Griego, Vice President of Sales & Marketing for the DACH region at Hurtigruten, indicated that this blend of international departures and authentic Norwegian coastal experiences has proven to be successful.
