AmaWaterways Launches New Cruises Along Colombia’s Magdalena River

On April 12, 2025, AmaWaterways launched its inaugural cruise along Colombia’s Magdalena River aboard the new vessel, AmaMagdalena. This marks the company’s entry into the South American market, expanding its portfolio which currently includes Europe, Asia, and Africa.

AmaMagdalena is specially designed for river cruising, accommodating up to 60 guests. The ship was built with collaboration from local Colombian artisans, featuring unique craftsmanship and a design by Marianna Schlegel Donado from Barranquilla. Each stateroom boasts twin balconies, offering between 237 to 516 square feet of space, along with amenities such as a sun deck pool, a fitness room, and options for dining that showcase Latin American cuisine.

The vessel offers two distinct itineraries: the "Magic of Colombia" and "Wonders of Colombia," both spanning seven nights and sailing between Cartagena and Barranquilla. Guests will have the chance to participate in excursions to sites like Santa Cruz de Mompox and Nueva Venecia, providing immersive experiences into Colombian culture. Additionally, AmaWaterways provides pre- and post-cruise packages in cities including Medellín, Cartagena, and Panama City.

With a focus on sustainable tourism, AmaWaterways is working closely with local communities to ensure that both tourists and residents benefit from the projects. They have also created nine custom-designed excursion boats to explore biodiverse regions along the river. Onboard, passengers can enjoy tastings of tropical fruits, artisanal chocolate, rum, and Colombian coffee, fostering a deeper connection to local traditions.
