Navantia and Royal Caribbean Strengthen Strategic Alliance with New Framework Agreement

On April 15, 2025, a significant Framework Agreement was signed between the Spanish shipyard, Navantia SA, and RCG-Royal Caribbean Group in Miami. This agreement aims to bolster their ongoing partnership and outlines future collaborations focused on drydock ship repairs and refurbishments.

The partnership traces back to 2011, beginning with the refurbishment of the Splendour of the Seas, now known as Marella Discovery. Since then, Navantia’s facility in Cádiz has serviced over 25 vessels from Royal Caribbean’s fleet, which also includes those from subsidiaries like Celebrity Cruises and Azamara. This collaboration highlights Navantia’s essential role in the cruise ship repair and revitalization industry.

The renewed agreement includes a significant refurbishment project for the Allure of the Seas, currently undergoing a 42-day overhaul at the Cádiz facility. This project entails an investment of more than EUR 91.5 million and encompasses over 14,000 tasks, such as machinery overhauls, cabin renovations, and public area enhancements, including bars, terraces, pools, and the ship’s iconic 10-story slide.

The Allure of the Seas has a history of being serviced at this shipyard, with previous refurbishments occurring in 2015 and 2020, showcasing the established rapport between Navantia and Royal Caribbean. This recent update is a part of Royal Caribbean’s broader Royal Amplified program, initiated in 2018, aimed at upgrading several ships to improve guest experiences.

Once the refurbishment is completed, the Allure of the Seas will engage in 7-night Mediterranean itineraries starting from Barcelona, visiting popular ports such as Marseille, La Spezia, Civitavecchia, and Palma de Mallorca. In November 2025, the ship will then reposition to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, to commence Caribbean cruises.
