Launch of the Adora Flora: A New City Ship Unveiled at Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding
The Adora Flora City, China’s second large cruise ship, achieved a major construction milestone on April 28, 2025. This milestone was marked by the launch and floating operation at Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding, a branch of China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC). Early that morning, water was introduced into the dry dock, allowing the vessel to float for the first time, and a floating ceremony was held to celebrate this event.
The floating stage is essential in shipbuilding as it allows for comprehensive inspection and testing of the vessel’s hull and integrated systems before it moves into the outfitting phase and mooring trials.
The Adora Flora City is part of China’s strategic initiative to design and construct cruise ships domestically, a project known for its technical challenges. Construction commenced in August 2022, with an anticipated delivery at the end of 2026. This vessel, displacing approximately 141,900 metric tons and measuring 341 meters long (17.4 meters longer than its predecessor, the Adora Magic City), features enhanced guest accommodations, including 2,130 staterooms that can accommodate up to 5,232 passengers. Public areas have also been expanded to bolster onboard amenities.
Project engineers note that advancements in shipbuilding techniques have accelerated the construction timeline of Adora Flora City compared to that of Adora Magic City.
Once complete, Adora Flora City will be homeported in Guangzhou, Guangdong Province. In contrast, Adora Magic City, which began construction in October 2019, was finished in July 2023 and began servicing passengers in November 2023, after over 100 voyages and accommodating more than 350,000 guests since its inaugural trip in January 2024.
