Norway’s Port Ålesund Takes Major Steps in Shore Power Integration for Cruise Ships

In its first full year of offering onshore power supply (OPS), the Port of Ålesund in Norway reported that 60% of cruise ships took advantage of the service, with plans to increase this to 70% in the current year. The OPS system, operational since 2022, enables two large cruise vessels to connect at once, providing a combined capacity of 32 megavolt-amperes (MVA).

Developed through a joint venture between the Port of Ålesund and Plug Ålesund AS, the shore power infrastructure represents an investment of EUR 12 million, with about 20% funded by the Norwegian government. This system meets international high-voltage shore connection standards and offers 100% renewable energy certified by Guarantees of Origin.

Any technical challenges encountered during setup were addressed through collaboration between port authorities and the cruise industry. The port has implemented three connection points and utilizes a flexible cable management system to ensure efficient operations. Future plans include adding OPS capabilities for smaller vessels to further enhance overall capacity.

Revenue from cruise activities is being reinvested into programs that support the local fishing industry and cargo shipping, highlighting the port’s commitment to benefitting the surrounding community. Surveys indicate that 60-70% of local residents and politicians have a favorable view of cruise tourism.
