Historic First: LNG Bunkering for Cruise Ships at Port Vancouver, BC
The Port of Vancouver has achieved a groundbreaking milestone in maritime sustainability with its first-ever liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkering operation for a cruise vessel. This event was facilitated by Seaspan Energy’s LNG bunkering tanker, Seaspan Garibaldi, which supplied the ship that was set to journey to Alaska.
This initiative marks the commencement of LNG fueling for deep-sea cruise vessels at Vancouver, establishing the port as a significant player in advancing lower-emission maritime operations. LNG is the first broadly available alternative fuel within the international shipping sector, sanctioned for extensive bunkering at this port. The Port of Vancouver aims to align its operations with global decarbonization targets, including the International Maritime Organization’s goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.
While biofuels have previously been offered in limited quantities, LNG presents the first substantial alternative to diesel-based fuels at scale. This shift is essential for future fuel developments, including ammonia. Seaspan Energy, accredited for LNG bunkering from the port authority in late 2023, operates three LNG bunkering vessels on North America’s West Coast and has successfully conducted multiple refueling activities for container ships and bulk carriers.
The LNG integration process followed a thorough safety evaluation led by the port authority, using international best practices to ensure safety and environmental responsibility. Vancouver’s cruise sector has embraced programs promoting sustainability, such as the ECHO Program, which helps protect marine life by moderating vessel speeds in sensitive regions. Over 90% of cruise operators participated in this initiative in 2023, and a significant majority are expected to connect to the port’s hydro-powered shore grid in 2024.
Since 2009, the adoption of shore power has significantly reduced greenhouse gas emissions from cruise-related activities. The port’s environmental efforts have earned recognition through awards like the Blue Circle Awards, highlighting the achievements of five cruise lines for their ecological initiatives.
With a projected 301 cruise calls in 2025, each generating an average of CA$3 million for the local economy, Vancouver continues to serve as a pivotal hub for Alaska-bound voyages, further embracing sustainable maritime practices.
