Cayman Islands Residents Voice Opposition to Proposed Cruise Pier Project

Cayman Islands residents have decisively opposed the development of cruise ship berthing facilities in George Town, as reflected in results from a recent referendum. Approximately 65% of voters—around 11,973 people—rejected the initiative, while about 30%—or 5,417 individuals—were in favor. The vote saw around 1,275 residents annul their ballots out of a total of 18,539 responses.

The referendum occurred alongside a general election and addressed various issues, including proposals for a national lottery and the decriminalization of cannabis. The strong opposition to the cruise pier project was supported by CPR Cayman, a local tourism group advocating against its construction. A spokesperson highlighted the need for the new government to respect the voters’ decision and criticized the proposal for its lack of details, such as cost estimates and socioeconomic impacts.

The Cayman Islands’ Association for Cruise Tourism (ACT), which had supported the cruise project, acknowledged the outcome but expressed disappointment, emphasizing the potential adverse effects on the local economy and livelihoods dependent on cruise tourism. They reiterated their commitment to promoting a sustainable cruise industry that can best serve the interests of the people and the territory.
