Costa Favolosa Enhances Sanitation Measures Following Gastrointestinal Illness Reports
Costa Favolosa has activated emergency health protocols in response to reports of gastrointestinal illnesses among passengers during its ongoing 7-day journey in Northern Europe. Departing from Hamburg, Germany, the ship has made several stops at major ports. Mid-cruise, several guests began displaying symptoms typical of gastroenteritis.
On May 18, 2025, while docked at Newhaven, near Edinburgh, Scotland, the cruise line launched a comprehensive sanitation operation. Passengers received formal communication explaining the extensive disinfection measures being implemented to uphold hygiene standards. During this time, they were asked to either temporarily disembark or stay outside their cabins to allow for thorough cleaning.
In an effort to mitigate the spread of illness, high-contact surfaces throughout the vessel saw intensified sanitation. Certain services and public areas were temporarily suspended, with increased reminders about hygiene practices communicated to both passengers and crew. Costa Cruises assured that these measures align with their established health guidelines, acknowledging that containment can be difficult with gastrointestinal viruses in closely populated environments.
Captain Valentino Savarese addressed passengers, explaining that the virus could be transmitted through commonly touched surfaces, including door handles and railings. He urged everyone onboard to adhere to strict hand hygiene practices and limit physical contact. Passengers were advised to utilize in-cabin restrooms to decrease shared exposure and were encouraged to report any illness symptoms immediately. They were also warned against consuming unsealed water while ashore, with an emphasis on choosing bottled water for safety.
Although the cruise is operating as planned, Costa Cruises did not disclose specific figures about the number of affected passengers. However, representatives reaffirmed that the situation is under control and being closely monitored, with guest and crew health remaining their top priority.
Costa Favolosa is currently on a 19-day voyage from Marseille, France, to Hamburg, with the itinerary running from May 3 to May 22, 2025. More information on incidents related to Costa Favolosa can be found on its CruiseMinus page.
