ASUKA III Completes First LNG Bunkering in Singapore: A Milestone in Eco-Friendly Shipping

The ASUKA III, the largest Japan-flagged cruise ship, has marked its debut in LNG (liquefied natural gas) bunkering at the Singapore Cruise Centre. This operation signifies a pivotal step forward for the Asia-Pacific cruise industry in adopting cleaner marine fuels.

The bunkering was conducted by FueLNG Private Limited, a collaboration between Shell Singapore and Seatrium. Notably, this also represents Shell’s first LNG supply for a cruise vessel in the region, highlighting Singapore’s emerging status as a hub for sustainable maritime fuel solutions.

ASUKA III boasts a gross tonnage of 52,200 GT, measures 230 meters in length, 30 meters in width, and features 385 passenger staterooms. This 13-deck ship, delivered in April 2025, is equipped with a dual-fuel propulsion system that enables it to utilize both LNG and traditional marine diesel.

Earlier in 2025, the cruise ship Silver Nova from Silversea had also received LNG at the same terminal, showcasing a broader trend within the industry to transition towards LNG in an effort to lessen greenhouse gas emissions associated with maritime travel.

The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) has played a crucial role in facilitating these initiatives, striving to establish the region as a top LNG bunkering location. Through partnerships with industry stakeholders, the MPA is committed to supporting the maritime sector’s shift towards more sustainable energy sources.

The successful LNG bunkering of ASUKA III enhances its operational capabilities and sets an important benchmark for the future of LNG-powered cruise operations in the region, aligning with global efforts to promote environmentally responsible maritime practices.
