Salmonella Alert: Cruise Ship Outbreak Traced to Recalled Cucumbers

At least 45 individuals across 18 states have been affected in a salmonella outbreak linked to recalled cucumbers. The outbreak has particularly impacted passengers aboard six different cruise ships. These cucumbers, distributed by Fresh Start Produce Sales and produced by Bedner Growers in Florida, were recalled after testing positive for salmonella.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 16 people have been hospitalized as a result of this outbreak. The contaminated cucumbers were sold between April 29 and May 19, primarily to grocery stores, restaurants, hospitals, and cruise liners.

The illnesses aboard the cruise ships were reported between late March and mid-April, but it’s unclear if the cucumbers were consumed onboard or shortly prior to embarkation. This incident is part of a genetic strain of salmonella that the CDC is currently investigating.

In addition to the cucumbers, the FDA has confirmed that some samples from a distribution center in Pennsylvania matched the strain found in sickened patients. Major retailers, including Target, have issued recalls for whole cucumbers, salads, vegetable rolls, and deli items that might contain cucumbers.

Salmonella infection can lead to serious symptoms including diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps. While most healthy individuals recover without treatment within a week, those at greater risk include children under 5, adults over 65, and individuals with weakened immune systems.

The CDC and FDA are actively monitoring for new cases and exploring the possibility of other contaminated products or states being involved in this outbreak. Consumers are advised to dispose of cucumbers or prepared foods containing cucumbers purchased within the specified timeframe and to ensure that any surfaces or containers that came into contact with them are thoroughly cleaned.
