MSC Cruises Plans to Build a Fleet of Four of the World’s Largest Cruise Ships

MSC Cruises is currently in advanced negotiations with the Meyer Turku shipyard in Finland to develop a new class of cruise ships, proposed to be named the "Constellation" class. If successful, these vessels are set to be the largest in the world, exceeding the dimensions and passenger numbers of Royal Caribbean’s ICON Class.

The ships will reportedly be around 365 meters long and have a gross tonnage of approximately 265,000 tons—surpassing the ICON of the Seas, which has a gross tonnage of 250,800 tons. The discussions for this ambitious project were revealed during a strategic meeting at MSC’s training center located near Sorrento, Italy, where executives highlighted plans for a significant fleet expansion with ultra-large vessels.

The Constellation class is intended to include four ships, marking a major shift for MSC, which has historically partnered with shipbuilders like Chantiers de l’Atlantique and Fincantieri. Collaborating with Meyer Turku aligns MSC with the shipyard’s recent projects, including those for Royal Caribbean’s ICON class.

Though MSC has yet to officially confirm the Constellation class, the new vessels are expected to incorporate cutting-edge technologies designed to prioritize sustainability and efficiency. This is in line with MSC’s commitment to environmental stewardship, further exemplified by their recent orders for LNG-powered World Class ships, focused on maximizing energy efficiency and minimizing carbon emissions.

If brought to fruition, the Constellation class would elevate MSC’s standing in the cruise industry, setting new standards for ship size and capacity and reflecting the company’s goal to lead the future of mega-ship cruising.
