ASUKA III Successfully Completes Inaugural LNG Bunkering in Singapore

The ASUKA III, Japan’s largest flagged cruise ship, has successfully conducted its first liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkering at the Singapore Cruise Centre. This operation marks a significant step towards cleaner marine fuel adoption in the Asia-Pacific cruise sector.

The bunkering was carried out by FueLNG Private Limited, a partnership between Shell Singapore and Seatrium. This event is noteworthy as it represents Shell’s first LNG supply to a cruise ship in the region, emphasizing Singapore’s growing role as a sustainable maritime fuel hub.

With a tonnage of 52,200 GT, a length of 230 meters, and 30 meters in width, the ASUKA III features 385 passenger staterooms. Operated by NYK Cruises, a subsidiary of Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK Line), the ship was delivered in April 2025 and is designed with a dual-fuel propulsion system, enabling it to run on both LNG and traditional marine diesel.

Earlier in 2025, Silversea’s Silver Nova also received LNG at the same terminal, highlighting a trend within the cruise industry towards using LNG as a transitional fuel to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions.

The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) has played a crucial role in promoting initiatives like LNG bunkering to position Singapore as a leading hub for LNG in maritime operations.
