AIDAnova Launches Shore Power Operations at Copenhagen’s Oceankaj Terminal

On June 2, AIDAnova, operated by AIDA Cruises, made history by being the first cruise ship to connect to the newly inaugurated shore power facility at the Oceankaj Cruise Terminal in Copenhagen. This milestone marks a significant step forward in Denmark’s effort to enhance maritime sustainability and aligns with the EU’s goal to implement shore power infrastructure in major ports across Europe by 2030.

The ceremony was attended by notable figures including King Frederik X of Denmark, EU Commissioner Dan Jørgensen, and Danish Minister of Transport Thomas Danielsen. AIDA Cruises President Felix Eichhorn highlighted the partnership with local entities to expand and utilize port power systems, reiterating AIDA’s commitment made during the 2022 Cruise Baltic meeting in Copenhagen. The company collaborated closely on the technical aspects of the new shore power system, facilitating necessary testing with AIDAnova.

Copenhagen Malmö Port’s CEO, Barbara Scheel Agersnap, emphasized the importance of the new shore power system, describing it as a key achievement in the maritime sector’s transition to green technologies. The facility is part of CMP’s broader sustainability strategy, which aims for a fossil fuel-free operation and net-zero carbon emissions by 2025.

The introduction of the shore power facility at Oceankaj extends AIDA Cruises’ network, allowing its fleet to access shore power in 14 ports across seven countries. In 2024 alone, they utilized shore power for 360 port calls, with plans to raise this to over 500 in 2025. Copenhagen will host 73 calls from five AIDA ships in 2025, underscoring its strategic significance as a Northern European cruise destination.

This initiative illustrates the cruise industry’s ongoing commitment to reducing carbon emissions and enhancing sustainable practices. By incorporating shore power capabilities, both ports and cruise lines are making substantial strides in minimizing their environmental footprint during port visits.
