Carbide Dock in Sault Ste. Marie: A New Hub for Great Lakes Cruise Ships
SAULT STE. MARIE — The Carbide Dock in Sault Ste. Marie is now complete, allowing the city to welcome its ninth cruise ship out of 50 scheduled visits this season. The Viking Octantis, measuring 665 feet and carrying 350 passengers along with 50 crew members, docked for most of the day. The arrival of cruise ships has proven beneficial for the local economy, contributing an estimated half-million dollars in 2023.
The project to enhance the Carbide Dock was initially approved by the city in 2017, with a total expenditure of approximately $35 million. Although minor electrical and landscaping work remains, the primary goal of finishing the dock for accommodating larger cruise ships has been achieved.
Harbormaster Kyler Reattoir expressed optimism about the future, stating, “We are more able to take bigger ships and more people with this dock. Looking forward there’s more and more cruise ships calling out. They are interested… and they are very anxious to get up here and see Sault Ste. Marie."
A ceremonial ribbon-cutting event is planned for the Carbide Dock on Friday, June 27 at 10 a.m.
