Marella Discovery 2: Celebrating 30 Years of Unforgettable Cruising Adventures

The Marella Discovery 2 has recently celebrated 30 years in service, originally launched as the Legend of the Seas under Royal Caribbean International. This Vision-class ship, built at the Chantiers de l’Atlantique shipyard, was delivered on April 28, 1995.

After an Atlantic crossing with no passengers, she embarked on her maiden voyage on May 16, 1995, sailing from PortMiami through the Caribbean, transiting the Panama Canal, and ultimately reaching Los Angeles. The voyage then continued to Vancouver for a summer season in Alaska and Canada, marking a significant start to her career that included Royal Caribbean’s first cruise to Hawaii. Over the following twenty years, the Legend of the Seas visited numerous destinations globally and became one of the company’s most-traveled vessels.

Before transitioning to Marella Cruises in 2017, the ship also explored various regions such as the Mediterranean, Northern Europe, and Asia. Its new chapter began after a refurbishment in Europe, rebranding as the Marella Discovery 2, with her maiden season for the British operator starting on May 14, 2017.

In 2025, the Marella Discovery 2 is poised to operate summer itineraries in the Eastern Mediterranean followed by Caribbean fly-cruises from Bridgetown, Barbados. To bolster its position in the UK market amidst an aging fleet, Marella Cruises has ordered two new 120,000-ton ships from Fincantieri shipyard, scheduled for delivery in 2030 and 2032. This will mark the first new builds specifically designed for Marella Cruises.
