AmaMagdalena: A New Dawn for Colombia’s Magdalena River Celebrated in a Special Christening Ceremony

AmaWaterways has officially launched its newest vessel, the AmaMagdalena, during a christening ceremony on June 17th in Mompox, Colombia, a UNESCO World Heritage site. This ship is groundbreaking as the first luxury river cruise ship to navigate the historic Magdalena River, marking a significant step in sustainable tourism development for the region.

The event was attended by local dignitaries and representatives from various Colombian ministries, showcasing the partnership between AmaWaterways and both public and private stakeholders who have supported this initiative over the past three years.

Residents of Mompox gathered along the riverbanks to witness the blessing of the ship, emphasizing the community’s pride and connection to this milestone. The AmaMagdalena hosts 60 passengers and features interiors designed in collaboration with local artisans, guided by architect Camilo Restrepo. The ship showcases handcrafted woodwork from local projects in Cartagena and custom furniture by local designers, creating an environment perfect for an upscale river cruise experience.

With amenities like a Sun Deck pool, fitness center, a Main Restaurant serving a blend of Latin American and Western dishes, and a specialty dining option for al-fresco meals, the ship promises an intimate onboard atmosphere.

AmaMagdalena will offer two unique seven-night itineraries, named the “Magic of Colombia” and “Wonders of Colombia,” traveling between Cartagena and Barranquilla. These itineraries are set to include cultural highlights such as a private celebration of the Barranquilla Carnival, guided tours in Mompox with exclusive jazz performances, birdwatching excursions, and visits to Palenque, recognized as the first free town in the Americas.

Additionally, there are optional land extensions available for travelers interested in experiencing Medellín, Cartagena, and Panama City.

Co-founder and CEO Rudi Schreiner highlighted the significance of launching a luxury cruise service in a previously inaccessible region, crediting the project’s success to local engagement that benefits both visitors and riverside communities. Kristin Karst, co-founder and Chief Brand Ambassador of AmaWaterways, noted how locals welcomed the arrival of AmaMagdalena, reinforcing the launch as a long-held vision to merge cultural exploration with economic benefits for local populations.

The initiative was further endorsed by ProColombia, whose leadership emphasized its role in boosting high-end tourism and showcasing Colombia’s rich cultural and natural heritage. To expand its offerings in Colombian river cruising, AmaWaterways plans to introduce a sister ship, the AmaMelodia, later this year.
